Bar trivia: how it works and where to play

Bar trivia is a team quiz played at a bar, pub, brewery or restaurant, usually on the same night every week. Here is how a night runs and how to find one near you.

No credit card needed to try it.

What bar trivia is

Bar trivia (also called pub trivia or pub quiz) is a team game. Groups of friends, coworkers or strangers who got pulled together at the bar sit at a table, pick a team name and answer questions read by a host. Teams usually have somewhere between two and six people, and the best ones mix people who know sports, movies, history and whatever the host's music round is going to throw at them.

Most bar trivia is weekly. A venue picks a slow night, books a host, and the same teams come back week after week. That is what makes it different from a party game: there are regulars, rivalries, and a running sense of who the team to beat is.

How a typical trivia night runs

A night usually lasts between 90 minutes and two hours. The host runs several themed or general knowledge rounds, often with a picture round or a music round mixed in, and finishes with a final question where teams wager some of their points.

  1. Teams arrive, grab a table and sign up with the host. Get there early on popular nights.
  2. The host explains the rules: no phones for looking up answers, how long each question runs, how scoring works.
  3. Each round, teams write their answers on an answer sheet or submit them on a phone.
  4. After every round, the host reveals the answers and updates the leaderboard.
  5. The final question decides the night. If teams are still tied, a tiebreaker (often the closest number wins) settles it.

Finding trivia nights near you

The list above shows cities where venues using QuizTreff have published their upcoming trivia nights. Each venue page lists the dates, the start time and whether the night is in English or German. Venues choose whether they appear here, so the list grows as more bars, breweries and restaurants publish their schedules.

If your city is not listed yet, the old methods still work: ask the bartender at your local, check the chalkboard by the door, or look at the event calendar on the websites of nearby breweries.

Tips for your first trivia night

  • Bring a mix of people. A team of four people who all know the same things will hit a wall in the second round.
  • Write something down for every question. A guess can score; a blank never does.
  • Pick a team name you are happy to hear read out loud in front of the room.
  • Listen to the host's rules on phones. Looking up answers gets teams disqualified at most venues.
  • Come back next week. Most teams get noticeably better once they learn the host's style.

Starting trivia at your venue

If you run a bar, brewery or restaurant, trivia is one of the most dependable ways to fill a weeknight. You need a host (yourself, a staff member or a local trivia host), a set of questions each week, a TV or projector and a way to keep score.

QuizTreff covers the scoring and the screen. Teams join by QR code in the browser or play on printed answer sheets, the big screen shows the countdown and the standings, and your weekly nights are created automatically. Once your schedule is set, you can publish it here so new teams in your city can find you. QuizTreff is in beta and you can try it without a credit card.

Usually yes. Some solo players join another small team at the start of the night, which many hosts are happy to arrange.

Venues that run their trivia nights with QuizTreff can turn on a public listing for the venue and its dates. It is optional and can be switched off again.
